Community Blog - July 2010

July 28 - Planning is underway for the 3rd annual Cheering Section for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon running on Sunday September 26th.  We are busily organizing some great entertainment and will  offer food and refreshments and lots of fun as we cheer on the racers during the early morning!  This event is a great community builder and raises money for 4 Swansea Community Groups;  The Swansea Community Recreation Center, The Swansea Town Hall , The Swansea Area Ratepayers’ Association and the Swansea Royal Canadian Legion Branch 46.  Last year we raised in excess of $6000, split evenly among these 4 groups, and this year we are trying to beat that record!  Scotiabank awards prizes to the BEST cheering sections along the route and last year we got an honourable mention and $1000 prize!  This year we are aiming for FIRST PRIZE and, to do this, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Please come down to the Lakeshore at Windermere at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday September 26th.  PLEASE bring colourful flags, noisemakers and wear colourful clothes!  We will provide you with food AND great entertainment!  Have fun and help us show the racers what a great community Swansea is....we know how to CHEER!!

The 22 crosses across the upper part of the mural are in memory of the Swansea men who died in WWI. A map of Swansea fills the lower part of the wall with many recognizable buildings and local animals. Below you can see part of the wall so come and see for yourself this amazing piece of art work, and while you are here borrow and book from the Swansea Memorial Library.

July 9 - The Swansea Town Hall is always conscious of the environment and always looks for new opportunities to green the Town Hall inside and out.

This year in our garden we have been very successful in growing Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) upon which the Monarch Butterfly lays her eggs. We are thrilled to announce the arrival of a monarch caterpillar that tripled in size over a period of a few days. We have also received many complements on the pleasant scent produced by the very attractive flowers.

May 7 - Spring has sprung and the front of the Town Hall looks exquisite with a variety of flowers. The Service Berry Trees planted a few years ago have delicate white flowers, encircling their trucks are a ring of daffodils; the red leaves of the Japanese Maples are beginning to open, while interspersed amongst the rocks are various tulips. Surrounding the base of the Swansea Memorial Library sign are the 170 Remembrance Tulips planted to honour the men and women who served in WWI. 155 yellow tulips represent those who returned home and the 22 red the Swansea residents who were lost. Near to our native plant hillside garden our very own highbred variety of Viola Tricolors from the various pansies that have brought colour to our entrance way over the last few years are springing up.

February 24 - The Swansea Town Hall was proud to support and promote the Inorganic Market that took place in the No Frills parking lot on Bloor Street near Runnymede. This was the second event of this type that the Town Hall has supported. The turn out of Bloor West Village residents was so over whelming that the organizers had to arrange for a second truck to carry all the donated electronic items away, clearly a success! A portion of the revenue that comes from recycling these electronic items will be donated to the Swansea Town Hall. You can visit Inorganic Market web site at www.inorganicmarket.ca to learn more about this amazing program and other drop off locations that they are arranging.
